Item Description

Nathan Drake has hung up the holster. He is married to Elena, working a salvage job, and keeping his old adventures in a box in the attic, until his older brother Sam, presumed dead for fifteen years, turns up owing a debt to a dangerous man and holding a lead on the lost treasure of the pirate Henry Avery. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is Naughty Dog's farewell to Drake, and from the opening flashbacks of the two brothers as boys, it is clear this chapter is about what the hunt has cost him.

The chase for Avery's fortune and the legendary pirate colony of Libertalia runs from a Scottish cathedral and a high-society auction in Italy to the jungles and highlands of Madagascar. The climbing feels more physical than in any earlier Uncharted, with Drake hammering a piton into rock faces and swinging on a grappling rope that turns every gap into an opportunity. Combat arenas are wider and more vertical, inviting you to stalk through tall grass and mark enemies before choosing between stealth and an open firefight, and the 4x4 drive across Madagascar opens the series up into larger, freer stretches than it had attempted before. Collectibles, journal entries and optional conversations reward players who take their time.

What made it a landmark, though, is the character work. Directed by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley after The Last of Us, it gives Nate, Sam, Elena and Sully room to breathe in quiet scenes as well as action, and introduces strong rivals in the wealthy Rafe Adler and Nadine Ross, leader of the mercenary outfit Shoreline. The set pieces are as spectacular as fans expect, but the moments that stick are smaller: a round of Crash Bandicoot on the couch, a conversation in a car, an epilogue that lands with real feeling.

Released in 2016 to wide critical acclaim, A Thief's End became a showcase for what the PS4 could do with lighting, animation and detail. It closes Nathan Drake's story, and playing it on the console it was made for is the right way to give the series its proper send-off.
