Item Description

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves opens with Nathan Drake waking up bleeding in a train car that is hanging off a Himalayan cliff, and it spends the next ten hours explaining how he got there. That opening is a statement of intent. Naughty Dog's 2009 sequel took the pulp-adventure foundation of Drake's Fortune and turned it into something closer to a blockbuster film you could actually play, with climbing, gunfights and storytelling stitched together so smoothly that the seams almost disappear.

The adventure chases the lost fleet of Marco Polo and the Cintamani Stone, a legendary gem tied to the hidden city of Shambhala. It begins with a museum heist in Istanbul alongside the slippery Harry Flynn and the sharp, flirtatious Chloe Frazer, and when a double-cross goes wrong Drake ends up racing the war criminal Zoran Lazarević across Borneo, a war-torn city in Nepal and the snowbound mountains of Tibet. Elena Fisher and Sully return, and Creative Director Amy Hennig's script gives the whole cast quick, natural banter, voiced by Nolan North, Emily Rose and Claudia Black.

What people remember are the set pieces. A building collapses around Drake while a helicopter chases him across the rooftops of Nepal, a tank rolls through a mountain village, and the famous train level has you climbing, shooting and leaping along carriages as the scenery races past. New stealth takedowns let you thin out patrols before a firefight, the puzzles in old temples give the action room to breathe, and Greg Edmonson's score adds a sense of sweep to the whole journey.

Among Thieves collected a shelf of Game of the Year awards and became the template that cinematic action games chased for the rest of the generation. It was also the first Uncharted with online competitive and co-op multiplayer, though those servers have since been retired, so the campaign is the draw today. Playing it on the PS3 it was built for, the console Naughty Dog pushed harder than almost anyone, is still the best way to see why it made such an impact in 2009.
