Item Description
Fitting a full mixed martial arts simulation onto a handheld sounds like a recipe for compromise, which is what makes the PSP edition of UFC Undisputed 2010 such a pleasant surprise. Yuke's and THQ carried the console game's structure across nearly intact, with Career, Title Mode, Title Defense, Tournament and the new Ultimate Fights mode, which revisits memorable UFC bouts and replaced the previous year's Classic Fights. Underneath it all sits the same layered system of striking, clinch work and ground transitions that made the series a hit on the bigger consoles.
This was the year the series got serious about the cage. Fighters can now use the fence in the clinch, cuts and injuries can force a TKO, and Karate, Judo and Greco-Roman wrestling join the list of disciplines you can build around. Career mode takes a created fighter from amateur bouts through the World Fighting Alliance toward a UFC contract, with a training camp system where overworking one attribute lets the others slip, so you are managing a body as much as a record.
On the PSP the controls are rebuilt around the hardware: the d-pad moves your fighter, the analog nub handles grappling, and the shoulder buttons cover blocking and modifiers. Ground transitions take some practice on the nub, but once the inputs settle in, the positional chess match is all there. The roster is a snapshot of the UFC at the height of its pay-per-view boom, with names like Brock Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua and Rashad Evans.
One reviewer summed it up as the console version shoved into your pocket, and that is still the appeal: a full career and a deep grappling game you can play anywhere, from the years when THQ's Undisputed series set the standard for what an MMA game could be.
