Somewhere in the middle of a match, Sweet Tooth's ice cream truck unfolds into a towering robot and starts stomping cars flat, and that moment sums up exactly what this Twisted Metal is about. The PlayStation 3 revival from Eat Sleep Play, the studio founded by series creator David Jaffe and Scott Campbell, brought the vehicular combat series back to consoles in 2012 roughly a decade after Twisted Metal: Black, and it doubled down on the arena chaos, the dark humor and the grindhouse attitude that made the PlayStation originals cult favorites.

Calypso's tournament is back, and the story mode follows three of its entrants: Sweet Tooth, the masked Mr. Grimm and the porcelain-faced Dollface, each chasing the wish Calypso promises the winner. Their stories play out in live-action cutscenes with a pulpy, horror-movie edge, and none of them end the way the drivers hope. Between those scenes you pick from a garage of armored rides, from Roadkill and Outlaw to the Reaper motorcycle, the Talon helicopter and the hulking Juggernaut semi, each with its own special weapon and handling.

The combat loop is pure Twisted Metal. You tear around large, destructible arenas collecting missiles, napalm and remote bombs, juggling turbo and energy attacks, and learning which vehicle suits your style. Speed and positioning matter as much as firepower, and a well-timed special can turn a lost fight in an instant.

Multiplayer was the centerpiece at launch, with big team battles online and modes like Nuke, where one side captures an enemy faction leader, sacrifices him to launch a missile and then steers it into the other team's giant statue. It is absurd, loud and very much in character for the series. Local split-screen keeps the couch side alive, and the story campaign stands on its own as a showcase of everything Jaffe's team loves about car combat. This Limited Edition release is the 2012 revival in its original PS3 form, a fitting shelf partner for the PlayStation-era classics that built the franchise.

About the game

Twisted Metal consists of a series of arena-based battles against an increasing number of opponents in increasingly large arenas. These battles culminate in a face-off with the winner of the previous year's competition, Darkside, who drives a large armored car which fires multiple missiles at once. Players can choose one of 12 different vehicles with which to enter combat. Each vehicle has a distinct driver and special move. The controls consist of accelerator, brake, "tight turn" (essentially a handbrake) and turbo on the face buttons, with main weapons and machine gun selection and control on the shoulder buttons. Arenas are populated with weapon pickups to re-supply missile stocks, repair stations for repairing damage to your car, pedestrians, and course stewards armed with either machine guns or missile launchers.
