Transformers: War for Cybertron is one of those rare licensed games that genuinely earns its place in a collector's library. Released by High Moon Studios, it ditched the movie tie-in formula entirely and instead delivered a story rooted deep in Generation 1 lore — a war-torn Cybertron before Optimus Prime and Megatron ever heard the word Earth. It was the game Transformers fans had been waiting years to get, and when it finally arrived, it delivered in a big way.

The campaign puts you right in the middle of the Cybertronian civil war, letting you play through both the Decepticon and Autobot perspectives across a series of hard-hitting third-person shooter missions. The level design is varied, the gunplay is satisfying, and the ability to transform mid-combat into a vehicle never gets old. You are never just a robot with a gun — you are a Transformer, and the game constantly reminds you of that distinction. Familiar faces like Bumblebee, Ratchet, Starscream, and Soundwave are all present and rendered in a sleek, angular aesthetic that feels true to the original animated series without being slavishly retro.

Multiplayer was another genuine highlight. The online modes supported cooperative play through the full campaign and included a competitive multiplayer component with class-based customization, letting you build your own Transformer with different alt-modes and weapon loadouts. For an Xbox 360 title, the online suite was genuinely deep and added tremendous replay value beyond the single-player experience.
