Item Description

Before Earth, before the Ark, before any human ever saw a robot in disguise, the Autobots and Decepticons fought over a planet made entirely of metal. Transformers: War for Cybertron is the game that finally took fans there. High Moon Studios and Activision skipped the movie tie-in formula and built a third-person shooter set in Cybertron's final days, a world of towering steel cities, energon refineries and orbital stations, told with the swagger of the Generation 1 cartoon and Peter Cullen back as the voice of Optimus.

The story runs in two campaigns, one for each faction. The Decepticon half follows Megatron's hunt for Dark Energon, the corrupting power he believes will win him the planet, and the Autobot half picks up as a young Optimus is forced to lead the resistance against him. Each chapter gives you a squad of three robots and lets you choose which one to control, so you can spend a level as Starscream, Soundwave or Bumblebee instead of the faction leader. The war builds to fights against colossal machines like Omega Supreme and the city-sized Trypticon, and it never stops feeling like a Transformers story.

Transformation is the hook that makes the shooting work. A click of the stick turns your robot into a jet, a tank or a car mid-firefight, and switching forms to flank, escape or close distance quickly becomes second nature. Heavy weapons, melee strikes and class abilities round out the arsenal, and the chunky, angular art direction gives every character the weight of a real toy.

The game was designed around online play too, with drop-in co-op for the campaign, the four-player survival mode Escalation and a class-based competitive mode, but its servers were shut down in 2020 and the digital version was delisted at the end of 2017. That leaves the disc as the way to own it, and the two campaigns are the reason to play it now. High Moon followed it with Fall of Cybertron in 2012, and this first chapter still has the best story about how the war began.
