Item Description

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is the kind of licensed action game that earns respect from fans and skeptics alike. Developed by High Moon Studios and released in 2012 as the direct sequel to War for Cybertron, it drops you into the final, desperate hours of the Autobot-Decepticon war on their home planet. This is no film tie-in or quick cash-in; it is a thoughtful, ambitious third-person shooter built by people who clearly understood what makes the Transformers mythology compelling.

The campaign hands you a different hero or villain in nearly every chapter, across both factions, each with a playstyle built around his abilities and vehicle mode. Grimlock is the standout: the chapters where you control the rage-fueled Dinobot leader shift into something closer to a brawler, a change of pace that feels earned rather than gimmicky. Jazz swings across chasms with his grapple, Cliffjumper slips past patrols under a cloak, the Combaticons get a chapter of their own that ends with you in direct control of the towering combiner Bruticus, and Optimus Prime calls in the colossal Metroplex to flatten the opposition. The writing respects the weight of a civilization tearing itself apart.

Cybertron itself is rendered with real visual ambition: towering mechanical architecture, glowing energon conduits and a palette that feels both alien and strangely beautiful. At launch the game also offered competitive multiplayer with a deep system for building your own Transformer from mix-and-match parts, along with the Escalation co-op mode, in which a team holds off waves of enemies. Both were built around online play; the campaign is the heart of the package.

Fall of Cybertron finishes the story War for Cybertron began, closing on the Ark's desperate departure from a dying world, the moment that sets up the saga generations of fans grew up with. Peter Cullen voices Optimus Prime, and the fan service is earned through loving detail rather than name-dropping. If you want the Great War told from the inside, on the planet where it started, this is the chapter to play.
