Item Description

Before the Autobots and Decepticons tear through Chicago in the third Michael Bay film, the war is already raging around the globe, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon drops you right into it. High Moon Studios, the team behind War for Cybertron, built this 2011 Activision release as a lead-in to the movie, sending both factions through South American jungles, a Siberian military facility and the streets of Detroit.

The headline feature is Stealth Force, a hybrid third form between robot and vehicle. It keeps a car or jet's speed and agility but bolts on robot-mode firepower, so you can strafe and shoot while racing across the battlefield, then shift into full robot form when a fight gets close. The campaign hands you a rotating cast, including Bumblebee, Optimus Prime and the cloaking spy Mirage on the Autobot side and Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave for the Decepticons, with each chapter shaped around that character's tools, and it borrows much of the gunplay and transformation feel High Moon had refined on Cybertron.

Reviews were mixed, and critics noted that the campaign never reaches the heights of War for Cybertron, but its movie-era designs, big set pieces and quick-hit action make it an easy weekend blast. At launch it also offered online multiplayer in the mold of War for Cybertron, built around four classes: Scout, Hunter, Commander and Warrior.

Its real hook for a Transformers shelf is where it sits: between War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron in High Moon's run, the moment the studio brought its Cybertron know-how down to Earth for the film universe. On a shelf built around the Bay films, it is the playable prologue to the third movie.
