Item Description

Tomba does not hit enemies so much as tackle them. The pink-haired jungle boy leaps onto their backs, clings on, and hurls them across the screen, which is just one of the reasons his 1998 PlayStation adventure has such a devoted cult following. Tomba! Special Edition brings that strange, cheerful and wildly ambitious platformer back with the kind of preservation treatment its fans spent decades hoping for.

The original came from Whoopee Camp, the studio founded by Tokuro Fujiwara, the designer behind Ghosts 'n Goblins and a key figure in early Mega Man. Tomba sets out to recover his grandfather's bracelet from a gang of mischievous Koma Pigs and ends up in a sprawling, non-linear world packed with odd jobs and requests from the people he meets. He bites things, stuffs strange items into his pockets, jumps absurdly high and moves between foreground and background layers to explore areas from new angles. The game tracks dozens of these little events, and finishing them uncovers new routes, abilities and items, so it often feels closer to an adventure game wrapped in a platformer than a straight run to the end.

Limited Run Games built the Special Edition on its Carbon Engine with modern conveniences like rewind and save states, plus a CRT filter for that authentic late-'90s look. The museum section is a treat, with box art from multiple regions, full manual scans, art and level design documents and an old TV commercial, along with new interviews with Fujiwara and composer Harumi Fujita. A remastered soundtrack gives the cheerful music a fresh coat of paint.

Tomba! was never a blockbuster, and it went far too long without a proper modern release, which is exactly why this one matters. The game is goofy, a little directionless and full of surprises, the sort of experience that rewards curiosity more than skill. For PS5 owners who missed it the first time, or who remember renting it and never forgot that pink hair, this is the easiest and best-supported way to play it today.
