Item Description

Partway through a lonely trek across a lost Peruvian valley, the ground starts to shake, and a Tyrannosaurus rex comes thundering into view. Plenty of players dropped their controllers at that moment in 1996, and it is a perfect snapshot of what made the original Tomb Raider so thrilling: you never knew what was waiting in the next cavern.

Lara Croft is hired by the businesswoman Jacqueline Natla to recover a piece of an ancient artifact, the Scion, from a tomb in Peru. The job turns out to be the first step into a much larger mystery, one that leads her through the lost city of Vilcabamba, Greek ruins such as St. Francis' Folly and the Palace of Midas, the tombs and obelisks of Egypt and finally the lost ruins of Atlantis. Along the way she crosses paths with rival hunters like Larson and Pierre, and with creatures far stranger than the wolves, bats and bears guarding the early tombs.

The experience is built on solitude. Developed by Core Design, with Lara created by Toby Gard, Tomb Raider made three-dimensional space the main event: vast chambers to read and scale, block-pushing and lever puzzles, timed runs past swinging blades and rolling boulders, and secrets tucked onto hidden ledges. The grid-based movement rewards precision, and learning exactly how far Lara can leap becomes second nature. Her twin pistols handle the fights, but the real adversary is usually the architecture, and Nathan McCree's sparse score swells only at key moments, which makes the silence of the tombs feel enormous.

Its influence is hard to overstate. Tomb Raider helped show what 3D action-adventure could be on the new generation of consoles, turned Lara into a pop-culture figure far beyond games and launched a franchise of sequels, films, comics and reboots. Greatest Hits was Sony's reprint line for the PlayStation's best sellers, and this game earned its place there. The adventure itself is the same one that started everything, and on original hardware the Lost Valley is still as startling as it was the first time.
