Item Description
The first time Lara Croft has to take a life in Tomb Raider, she shakes, gasps and nearly falls apart, and that moment tells you everything about what Crystal Dynamics set out to do. This 2013 reboot strips the series back to its origins: a 21-year-old Lara on her first expedition, shipwrecked with her mentor Roth and the crew of the Endurance on Yamatai, a storm-wrapped island off the coast of Japan ruled by a violent cult of castaways called the Solarii Brotherhood.
Survival drives everything. Lara hunts deer for food, takes up a bow she finds on the island, scales cliffs with a climbing axe and gradually becomes the fighter the series always knew. Salvage gathered across the island upgrades her bow, pistol, shotgun and rifle at base camps, while experience unlocks skills in the Survivor, Hunter and Brawler trees. Survival Instinct highlights useful objects and threats, and new gear such as rope arrows opens shortcuts back into earlier areas, giving the semi-open island a satisfying rhythm of exploration and return.
The set pieces are thrilling: a collapsing shipwreck, a desperate escape through a burning building, a wrecked plane teetering over a ravine and a mountaintop monastery battered by unnatural storms. Beyond the story, optional challenge tombs hide clever physics puzzles, and the island is scattered with relics, documents and GPS caches that flesh out Yamatai's legend of the Sun Queen Himiko. Camilla Luddington's performance and Rhianna Pratchett's script give Lara a vulnerability she had never shown before, and Jason Graham's score keeps the tension high.
The reboot was a critical and commercial hit and launched the Survivor trilogy that continued with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. On the PlayStation 3, it is the origin story in its original form, the release that reintroduced Lara to a whole new generation and set the tone for everything she has done since.
