Item Description

What if Borderlands were run by a twelve-year-old Dungeon Master with a love of explosions and absolutely no respect for the rules? Tiny Tina's Wonderlands answers that question with glee. Gearbox's 2022 spin-off unfolds as a session of Bunkers & Badasses, the tabletop game Tina first ran in a fan-favourite Borderlands 2 expansion, now expanded into a full fantasy shooter where the dice, the map and the whims of the narrator shape everything around you.

You play the Fatemaker, a rookie adventurer dropped into Tina's campaign against the Dragon Lord, voiced by Will Arnett with gloriously theatrical menace. Ashly Burch is back as Tina, while Andy Samberg and Wanda Sykes play Valentine and Frette, the players around the table who heckle, question and occasionally rewrite the story. Queen Butt Stallion, a diamond pony ruling the Wonderlands, is exactly as absurd as she sounds.

The loot-shooter heart is pure Borderlands, with piles of procedurally generated guns to chase, but the fantasy layer changes the rhythm. Spells replace grenades, melee weapons get their own slot, and six classes, among them the frosty Brr-Zerker, the undead-summoning Graveborn and the stealthy Stabbomancer, can be combined once multiclassing unlocks, opening up wild hybrid builds. Between missions you stomp across a tabletop overworld rendered like miniatures on a game board, where random encounters and hidden shrines wait in the grass. Once the story wraps, the Chaos Chamber endgame keeps the runs and rewards coming.

On PlayStation 5 the Next-Level Edition is the current-generation release, and it supports four-player co-op along with two-player split-screen on the couch, a feature the shooter genre has largely abandoned. Wonderlands is the sharpest-written comedy Gearbox has produced in years and a loving tribute to the chaos of tabletop gaming, the kind of shooter that is best played with a friend reading the jokes aloud.
