Item Description

Thunder Force V is what happens when a series that helped define 16-bit shooting steps into the polygon era and refuses to slow down. Technosoft built it first for the Sega Saturn, but that version never left Japan. North American players got their shot with this PlayStation edition, Thunder Force V: Perfect System, brought over in 1998 by Working Designs under its SPAZ label, and it was the series' first 32-bit installment to reach them.

The heart of the game is the CRAW. Up to three of these orbiting units can fly alongside your ship, the Gauntlet, adding firepower and soaking up enemy shots, and when they drift away they can be scooped back up. Pour CRAW energy into your current weapon and it becomes an Over Weapon, a massively boosted version of your shot that tears through the screen for a limited time before the energy needs to recharge. Deciding when to unleash that power and when to hold it back is the choice that separates a clean run from a frantic scramble, and retrospective critics have called the CRAW the game's hook.

Around that system sits horizontal shooting the way the series always did it best: five weapons with multiple power levels to swap between on the fly, relentless waves of mechanical enemies and boss fights that reviewers still single out as highlights. Polygonal 3D models and rendered cutscenes give the story of a rogue supercomputer called the Guardian real spectacle, and Hyakutaro Tsukumo's driving soundtrack rewards longtime fans by reworking earlier Thunder Force music into several boss themes. The Perfect System edition also added its own extras over the Saturn original, including CG movie sequences and a time attack mode for players chasing faster clears.

For shooter collectors, this disc has a special place on the shelf. It was the only way Thunder Force V officially reached North America at the time, it carries the Working Designs name that PlayStation import-minded fans followed closely, and it plays like a love letter to everything the series had built across the Mega Drive era. Plug in a good controller, turn the volume up and let the Over Weapon rip.
