Item Description

Sacrifice three creatures and you get a 9/9. Sacrifice five and you get a 25/25. Thromok the Insatiable has Devour X, where X is the number of creatures devoured, so every creature you feed it adds X counters instead of one. The growth is quadratic, and it gets out of hand fast.

That math makes the Hellion a natural finisher for red-green token decks. Spend the early turns flooding the board with 1/1s, then cast Thromok and turn a pile of chump blockers into a single monster that can end a game in a couple of swings. As a legendary creature it can also lead its own Gruul deck, where every token maker becomes ammunition and every creature with a death trigger pays you twice. Devour was born on the Shards of Alara, and Thromok is its most extreme expression.

This is the Planechase Anthology printing, collector number 106, illustrated by Terese Nielsen, in non-foil. Planechase Anthology gathered the Planechase decks and planes into one 2016 box, and Nielsen's fierce, hungry Hellion fits the chaos of that format perfectly.
