Hit the last note of a boss theme just as your party lands the finishing blow, and Theatrhythm Final Bar Line makes perfect sense. This is Final Fantasy's music turned into a rhythm RPG, with 385 tracks in the base game drawn mostly from the Final Fantasy series and a handful of other Square Enix titles, stretching from the 8-bit originals to the modern era. For a franchise whose music has carried as much emotional weight as its stories, it is a fitting celebration.
Colored triggers slide toward fixed marks on screen: red triggers call for a button press, yellow arrows for a flick of the stick, green bars for a hold. Some stages march your chibi party across a landscape, others pit them against classic monsters, and every clean hit powers the fight. Simple style reduces everything to single-button inputs for newcomers, while Pair style splits the notes between two players, so a friend can join in on the couch.
Beneath the rhythm sits a surprisingly deep RPG layer. You build a party of up to four from 104 Final Fantasy characters, each with a type, stats, levels and up to three abilities, and call in Summonstones for heavy damage. Series Quests walk through 29 titles one by one, unlocking songs as you go; Music Stages let you replay any unlocked track for high scores; and Multi Battle was designed around rooms of up to four players. The character art is by Monster Octopus, and the logo was illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano.
indieszero created the Theatrhythm series on the Nintendo 3DS, and Final Bar Line is its biggest entry by far, trading the old stylus controls for buttons and sticks that feel natural on Switch. Critics responded warmly, with a Metacritic score of 87. It works as a rhythm game and as a playable jukebox of more than three decades of Nobuo Uematsu and the composers who followed him, the rare spin-off that sends you straight back to replay the originals.
