Before Daryl Dixon ever met Rick Grimes, he and his brother Merle had their own road to survive, and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct tells that story. Built by Terminal Reality and published by Activision in 2013, at the height of AMC's hit show, this first-person prequel brings in Norman Reedus to voice Daryl and Michael Rooker as the volatile Merle, giving the TV versions of the Dixon brothers a game of their own.
The pace is closer to a survival game than a shooter. Gunfire draws walkers from every direction, so much of the game is about moving quietly, putting the dead down with a knife or Daryl's signature crossbow and recovering bolts afterward. Get grabbed and you are locked into a desperate struggle to break free, and a small group can turn into a crowd faster than you expect. Between missions you plan the road ahead on a map, choosing highways, back roads or side streets, each with its own trade-off between fuel use, scavenging opportunities and the risk of a breakdown.
Along the way you can pick up survivors, as many as your current vehicle can carry, equip them and send them out on supply runs while you deal with the dead. Fuel, food and ammunition are always running low, and pulling over at a rest stop to scavenge is a gamble every time. The story begins in the earliest days of the outbreak and follows Daryl's road toward reuniting with Merle, filling in the brothers' history before the show picks them up outside Atlanta.
Critics were hard on it at launch and the campaign is short, but it holds an unusual spot as one of the few Walking Dead console games built around the TV series' versions of its characters, with two of the show's stars voicing them. For a fan of the early seasons, it is a playable piece of the Dixon brothers' backstory and a curious snapshot of just how big The Walking Dead was in 2013.
