Item Description
Nayc wants to be the greatest alchemist in the world, which is a big dream for an apprentice who still needs reminding where the ingredients go. The Smile Alchemist, a 2023 release from developer ASOBOX and publisher Kemco, follows that ambition through the odd little town of Polta Kolta, where Nayc trains under the master alchemist Cyan alongside Cyan's daughter and shares his home with a talking cat. It is a gentle, quirky life sim with a crafting pot at its centre.
The loop is satisfyingly clear. You hire adventurers at the tavern and send them out to gather materials, choosing squares on an area grid that grows larger as you get to know each location, and Nayc can spend his energy cheering them on to lift their mood, so they bring back more or start acting on their own. Back home, recipe books bought at the shop unlock new creations in the Alchemy Pot, and Nayc's skill in disciplines such as food and chemicals decides what he can learn next. The finished goods are sold or given away, and helping the townspeople raises the level of the whole town.
The story unfolds in chapters, with side stories to read along the way and a cast of eccentric locals, and the tone is warm and whimsical rather than epic. It is a slow, contemplative game, closer to a cosy management sim than to Kemco's usual turn-based RPGs, and it rewards patience rather than speed. For players who enjoy the gather-craft-sell rhythm of the Atelier series and like their games small and charming, this physical PlayStation 5 release is an unusual little curiosity.
