Item Description

Something is wrong in Springfield. Wasp-shaped cameras buzz over Evergreen Terrace, black vans idle on every corner, and a new formula of Buzz Cola has the whole town acting strangely. Homer is the first to notice, which tells you everything about the tone of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Radical Entertainment took the open-city structure that Grand Theft Auto III had made a sensation and filtered it through the show's sense of humor, and the result was less a cash-in than a love letter to Springfield, written in the language of the show's best seasons.

The adventure runs across seven levels, handing the wheel to Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Apu in turn as each pulls on a different thread of the conspiracy. Springfield is split into three large districts packed with places fans know by heart: the Kwik-E-Mart, Krusty Burger, Springfield Elementary, Moe's and the nuclear plant. You drive everything from Homer's pink sedan to Marge's Canyonero, call up new rides from phone booths, and tear through story missions, street races and bonus jobs for the townsfolk. Plow through too much of the scenery and the Hit & Run meter fills until the police come after you, a cheeky nod to the games it was parodying.

Exploration pays off everywhere. There are collector cards hidden across every level, surveillance wasps to smash, coins to spend on costumes and cars, and interactive gags tucked into corners of town just waiting to be triggered. The show's voice cast is all over it, and the writing lands joke after joke, from passing pedestrians to the cutscenes that slowly reveal who is really behind the cameras. The final level gives the whole town a Treehouse of Horror makeover, a perfect send-off for anyone who grew up watching the Halloween specials.

Hit & Run has aged into a cult favorite, the Simpsons game people still bring up first and still campaign to see remade. The Greatest Hits label marks Sony's budget reprint line for PS2 games that sold strongly; the game itself is the same one that launched in 2003. For a Simpsons fan, there is no better way to spend an afternoon in Springfield than behind the wheel on original hardware, hunting down one more card and laughing at one more gag.
