Item Description

Springfield has gone self-aware. In The Simpsons Game, a mysterious video game manual gives the family superpowers, and before long the Simpsons realize they are characters trapped inside yet another Simpsons video game. Written by series veterans Tim Long, Matt Selman and Matt Warburton and voiced by the show's cast, EA Redwood Shores' 2007 adventure plays like a lost season of the show aimed squarely at people who play games.

Each family member brings a power to the party. Homer can roll into the giant Homer Ball or puff himself up into a floating balloon; Bart becomes Bartman, gliding on his cape and picking off targets with his slingshot; Lisa calls down the Hand of Buddha to rearrange the scenery; and Marge rallies a mob of angry townsfolk to do her bidding. Levels pair two Simpsons at a time and are built around combining their abilities, and a second player can join for local co-op.

The real joy is the parody. Stages skewer whole genres and franchises: Grand Theft Scratchy sends up open-world crime games, Medal of Homer lampoons World War II shooters, NeverQuest mocks fantasy role-playing epics, and Shadow of the Colossal Donut riffs on a certain PS2 masterpiece. Along the way the game keeps a running list of video game clichés for you to spot, turning tired gaming conventions into punchlines, and the story builds toward a finale in which the family goes looking for the people responsible for their world.

Licensed games rarely treat their source this well. Critics found the platforming uneven, but the writing drew warm praise, and the jokes land because they come from people who wrote for the show and clearly knew their way around a controller. In HD on the PlayStation 3, the cel-shaded Springfield looks like an episode in motion, which makes this the version that shows off the game's look best. It is a smart, chaotic satire of the medium starring the most famous family in television animation.
