The violence was over the top enough that THQ actually shipped it with both a censored and an uncensored mode, letting players choose their experience.
The story rips through the Marvel underworld with genuine energy, pitting Frank Castle against a rogues' gallery that includes the Russian, Jigsaw, and the Kingpin himself, Wilson Fisk. Familiar faces like Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. make appearances, grounding the game in a recognizable Marvel universe while keeping the focus squarely on Castle's grim crusade. Thomas Jane, who played Frank Castle in the 2004 film, lent his voice to the role here, giving the performance an authenticity that fans of that era's Punisher film will immediately appreciate.
Volition's technical craft shines throughout — the level design is varied, the gunplay is satisfying and weighty, and the game strikes a tonal balance between graphic action and comic book spectacle that few licensed titles have managed before or since.
