Item Description

How do you fit the biggest animated film of 1994 onto a Game Gear? Virgin Interactive's answer was a compact 8-bit edition of its Lion King platformer, released the same year as the movie and shared with the Master System, carrying Simba's whole journey onto Sega's handheld.

The game follows the film from playful beginning to dramatic end. As a cub, Simba is small and bouncy, pouncing on the creatures that get in his way, and the early stages carry the sunlit mood of his carefree days in the Pride Lands. Familiar moments from the movie shape the levels that follow, and eventually Simba grows into an adult lion, stronger and more imposing, for the final push to take Pride Rock back from Scar.

The 16-bit versions, developed by Westwood Studios for the Genesis and Super NES, became famous for being far harder than anyone expected a Disney movie game to be, and the handheld edition is no pushover either. Jumps demand precision and timing, and the smaller screen means reacting quickly to whatever comes next, so finishing it carries real bragging rights.

Virgin's Disney games, from Aladdin to The Lion King, are among the best-remembered licensed titles of the decade, but most players only know them from home consoles. The Game Gear version is the lesser-seen side of that story, and a fun way to relive the film in the palm of your hand on the hardware it was made for.
