A clicker's rattling croak in a flooded hotel basement. Ellie cracking terrible puns from a joke book while Joel tries not to smile. The Last of Us is built from moments like these, and they are why Naughty Dog's 2013 PlayStation 3 masterpiece stayed with so many players long after the credits rolled.
Twenty years after a mutated Cordyceps fungus collapsed civilization, Joel is a hardened smuggler working the Boston quarantine zone when he takes an unusual job: get fourteen-year-old Ellie out of the city and across a shattered America. What starts as cargo becomes something far harder to put down, and the road through Pittsburgh, a dam in Wyoming and a brutal winter carries them through four seasons of a country being reclaimed by nature. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson give performances that set a new bar for the medium, and Gustavo Santaolalla's sparse, haunting guitar score is recognizable within a few notes.
Moment to moment, it is a game about scarcity. Supplies scavenged from abandoned homes become shivs, health kits, Molotovs and nail bombs, crafted in real time while enemies close in, and listen mode lets Joel track threats by sound. The Infected are terrifying in different ways: Runners swarm, blind Clickers hunt by echolocation and kill instantly up close, and armored Bloaters hurl sacs of spores. Human enemies are often worse, flanking and calling out to one another as you sneak, improvise or fight your way past. Naughty Dog also built a competitive online mode, Factions, around the same crafting and stealth.
The Last of Us swept Game of the Year honors and went on to spawn a sequel, a remaster, a ground-up remake and an acclaimed HBO series, yet this is where all of it started. The original PS3 release shows how much Naughty Dog wrung out of the hardware near the end of the console's life, and it is the version that convinced a lot of players a game could hit as hard as prestige television.
