Item Description

George Jetson was just heading off to work when Captain Zoom appeared with bad news: Zora, leader of the space pirates, plans to loot the solar system of its resources, and Zoom has used up all his strength. So George gets the job, along with an unlikely weapon, the Pneumo Osmatic Precipitator, or P.O.P. for short.

That suction device is the whole hook of Invasion of the Planet Pirates, a platformer from developer Sting and publisher Taito. George uses it to cling to walls and ceilings and pull himself across gaps, to suck up blocks and enemies and spit them back out as projectiles, and even to breathe underwater. Across nine stages you'll ride tubes from one part of a level to another, take on mechanical bosses and, with a high enough score, reach bonus stages where you race the clock to collect items. One level even turns into a high-speed chase.

It's a cheerful hop-and-bop rather than a genre landmark, and reviewers in 1994 were lukewarm at best. Electronic Gaming Monthly praised its faithful cartoon animation and character graphics but found the suction attack awkward, while GamePro was harder still, suggesting it was mainly for players who already loved The Jetsons. The game had a curious second life in Japan, where Sting reworked it in 1995 into Yōkai Buster: Ruka no Daibōken, with a new heroine, new music, new enemies and new areas built on the same engine.

That backstory makes it a neat find for Hanna-Barbera collectors and for anyone following Sting, the studio that went on to make Treasure Hunter G for Square and later cult favorites like Baroque and Riviera. On a Super Nintendo it's a breezy afternoon in the Jetsons' space-age world, where a souped-up vacuum hose is all the weapon George needs.

About the game

George Jetson was about to run out to work when his pal Captain Zoom appears out of thin air. Zoom tells him that Zora, the leader of SPREE ("Space Pirates Revelling in Evil Enterprises"), is planning on looting this solar system of all its resource! Unfortunately, in his last encounter with Zora, Zoom has used up all his strength and now he is powerless so he asks George to take over. He gives George his Pneumo Osmatic Precipitator (or P.O.P.) and bids him good luck. Can George save his family and this galaxy? Guide George through 9 stages of intergalactic action armed with only his wits and the P.O.P....which is like a super vacuum. The P.O.P. can be used as a traveling tool by sucking onto walls and ceilings, it will enable George to climb up and across platforms. As a weapon, the P.O.P. can be used to suck up blocks or enemies and spit out at other enemies. George can also use the P.O.P. to breathe under water! Talk about multi-functional! George's conditions are indicated by the number of hearts he has at the top of the screen. By collecting more hearts, it will refill George's health.
