Item Description

Shinji Mikami helped invent modern survival horror with Resident Evil, and The Evil Within is the game where he went back to the genre's roots and dragged them somewhere far more disturbing. Developed by his studio Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2014, it casts you as detective Sebastian Castellanos, who answers a call about a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital and is pulled into a surreal hellscape where hallways rearrange themselves, rooms flood with blood and reality bends whenever the hooded figure Ruvik wants it to.

Resources are scarce and every bullet counts. Sebastian's Agony Crossbow fires bolts you assemble from scavenged parts, including harpoon, flash, freeze, shock and explosive varieties, and you often need to set traps or burn downed enemies with a limited supply of matches rather than fight head-on. Stealth matters too: creep up on one of the shambling Haunted and you can finish it quietly before the rest of the room notices. A cracked mirror leads back to a sanctuary where Nurse Tatiana waits beside an unsettling chair, and the green gel you collect buys upgrades to health, stamina, weapons and more.

The enemy design is the stuff of nightmares. A hulking, chainsaw-wielding butcher stalks the opening chapter, the many-limbed Laura scuttles out of pools of blood, and the Keeper, with a safe where his head should be, hunts you through rooms that seem to loop back on themselves. Your partners, Joseph Oda and Juli Kidman, drift in and out as the story fractures, and the letterboxed, grainy presentation gives everything the feel of a lost horror film.

It is a slow-burn, tension-soaked game that rewards patience and careful resource management, built for horror players who want the dread of the classics with the scale of a modern production. On the PlayStation 3 it makes a fitting companion to the Resident Evil games Mikami is famous for, and it is the opening chapter of a story Tango continued in The Evil Within 2.
