Item Description
Imagine a classic tactics RPG with the grid torn away. In The DioField Chronicle, your units move freely across the battlefield in real time, and the action pauses whenever you stop to issue orders, so every fight becomes a tense dance of positioning, flanking and well-timed abilities. Square Enix calls it the Real-Time Tactical Battle system, a deliberate nod to the Active Time Battle heritage of its older RPGs, and it gives this 2022 strategy game a feel unlike anything else in the publisher's catalogue.
The setting is the island of DioField and the Kingdom of Alletain, caught between two great powers, the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire and the Rowetale Alliance, as their war over the precious resource called Jade spills toward its shores. At the centre are the Blue Foxes, a mercenary company founded by the royal bodyguard Andrias Rhondarson and his childhood friend Fredret Lester, joined by Iscarion Colchester, a former noble turned archer, and the noblewoman mage Waltaquin Redditch. Their story is one of loyalty, ambition and political betrayal, told with a grounded, almost Game of Thrones sensibility.
That comparison is not accidental. The score comes from Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell, both veterans of HBO's Game of Thrones, and its sweeping themes give battles real weight. Missions mix straightforward assaults with escort runs, stronghold defences and races to capture key points, and skill points earned after each sortie let you shape your mercenaries into a team that suits your tactics. Square Enix co-developed the game with Lancarse, the studio that helped Atlus build Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and character designer Taiki gives the cast a striking, painterly look.
Reviews landed in mixed-to-positive territory, and the inventive combat is what its fans remember most, a genuine alternative to the usual grid. If you have played every Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre you can find and want a strategy RPG that plays at a faster, more fluid tempo, DioField is a fascinating experiment worth seeking out on PlayStation 5.
