Item Description

On July 3, 1986, the bombs fell on England, and John was born in a government fallout shelter at the very moment they did. Thirty years later he is the last person left underground, still following the strict daily routine his mother Margaret drilled into him: check the systems, take the medication, never stray from the safe section. Then the bunker begins to fail, and The Bunker becomes a slow, claustrophobic descent into the levels John has avoided all his life and the memories he has buried.

Splendy's 2016 thriller is told entirely in live-action full-motion video and played through point-and-click choices, and its greatest asset is its location. The production filmed for fifteen days inside the real Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Essex, a genuine Cold War government facility, so the concrete corridors, heavy doors and humming machinery are not sets. Adam Brown, Ori in The Hobbit films, gives a fragile, committed performance as John, alongside Sarah Greene of Penny Dreadful, and the script came from a team with credits on The Witcher, Broken Sword and SOMA.

The play is deliberate rather than demanding. You guide John through server rooms, air filtration systems and sealed lower levels as each repair goes wrong, while flashbacks gradually reveal what happened to the rest of the bunker's staff. Critics praised the narrative, the acting and the sound design, including a synth score with a John Carpenter flavor, and noted that interactivity is light; this is closer to an interactive film than a puzzle adventure.

That is exactly its appeal. The Bunker is a compact psychological horror story with a heavy British Cold War atmosphere and an ending that turns on a single, difficult choice, best played in one sitting with the lights off. It sits comfortably beside modern FMV favorites like Her Story and Late Shift as one of the more polished and unsettling entries in the genre's revival.
