Item Description

Late-1990s PlayStation racing had two moods. Gran Turismo asked you to tune gear ratios, while Test Drive 5 asked how fast you could thread an exotic through city traffic with a police cruiser on your bumper. Developed by Pitbull Syndicate and published by Accolade in 1998, it is the Test Drive series at its loudest and most cheerfully arcade, and the version that earned a place in Sony's Greatest Hits line.

The garage mixes licensed modern exotics with classic American muscle, so a race can pit sleek late-'90s sports cars against big-block legends from decades earlier. The courses span real-world locations around the globe, and the familiar Test Drive formula is in full effect: open roads, civilian traffic and cops who will happily end your run. Winning races unlocks new cars and courses, which gives the single-player mode a steady pull.

Beyond the standard Single Race and Cup modes there is plenty of variety. Drag Race strips everything down to raw acceleration, Time Trials test your best lines, and Cop Chase flips the script by putting you behind the wheel of a police car to run down speeders. Split-screen racing for two players makes it a natural couch showdown, and the soundtrack's industrial rock and techno set the late-'90s tone perfectly.

Test Drive 5 is pure turn-of-the-millennium attitude: chunky polygon cities, roaring engines and a sense that every race is one bad decision away from a spectacular crash. It is a fun, fast companion to the more serious racers of its era, and a loud, happy way to relive weekend split-screen showdowns on original hardware.
