Item Description

Picture a Japanese RPG series famous for its wildly exaggerated take on feudal Japan turning that same playful lens on the American frontier. That is the hook of Tengai Makyou: The Apocalypse IV, the Sega Saturn chapter of the Far East of Eden series from Hudson and Red Company, which leaves behind the fantasy Jipang of earlier games for a fantastical, tongue-in-cheek version of 19th-century America.

Far East of Eden began on the PC Engine CD-ROM, where it helped show what disc storage could do for console RPGs with voiced scenes, animation and a strong comic streak, and it built a loyal following in Japan while staying almost entirely untranslated. Apocalypse IV carries that tradition to the Saturn, pairing classic turn-based battles and party building with a big cast, broad humor and dramatic story turns as its heroes travel across a distorted, larger-than-life United States.

Much of the fun is seeing America through the eyes of 1990s Japanese game makers. Geography, landmarks and cultural shorthand are bent for comic and dramatic effect, much as the earlier games played with Japanese folklore, and the result is a world that feels unlike any Western-made RPG of the era.

This is a Japanese release with Japanese text throughout, so it is best suited to import collectors and Saturn RPG fans who want a piece of a series most Western players only know by reputation. On a shelf of Saturn imports, few titles say as much about how adventurous the console's Japanese library could be.
