Tales of Xillia asks you to choose a hero before the adventure even begins. Pick Jude Mathis, a gifted medical student in the city of Fennmont, or Milla Maxwell, a mysterious woman who commands four powerful spirits, and the same story unfolds from a different angle, with scenes and stretches of the journey you will only see on that path. It is a simple idea that gives the game real replay value and makes its two leads feel like equals.
Their world, Rieze Maxia, is a land where humans and spirits coexist, and the trouble begins when Jude stumbles onto a secret weapons project that threatens that balance. Before long he and Milla are fugitives, gathering a party that includes the charming, untrustworthy mercenary Alvin, the shy young Elize and her talking doll Teepo, the courtly old butler Rowen and Jude's spirited childhood friend Leia. The story widens into political intrigue and questions of loyalty, and it led directly into a sequel, Tales of Xillia 2.
Battles run on the Double Raid Linear Motion Battle System, which lets you link with any party member mid-fight. Linked partners cover each other, unlock abilities of their own, such as Alvin breaking an enemy's guard or Elize healing the team, and combine artes into Linked Artes for big, satisfying finishers. Character growth happens on the Lilium Orb, a web-like board where you choose which stats and skills to unlock next.
Xillia first launched on the PlayStation 3 in 2011 in Japan and 2013 in the West, and this remaster marks its first appearance on a Nintendo console. It brings a generous set of modern conveniences: autosave, a dash mode, a switch that turns off field and dungeon encounters, destination markers on the map, event skipping and a retry option after a lost battle. The Grade Shop is available from the very first playthrough, much of the original DLC is included and you can switch between English and Japanese audio. It is a well-tuned way to play a strong, story-rich entry in the Tales series, especially on a portable screen.
