Item Description

Surgical Strike throws you into the pilot's seat of a military hovercraft tearing through a city torn apart by war, with live-action footage of shattered streets rushing past and enemy targets appearing in every frame. It came from The Code Monkeys and Sega in 1995, deep into the Sega CD's lifespan, when the full-motion video shooter had become the format's signature genre.

The game asks you to make two kinds of decision at once. Moment to moment you choose between your guns and your rockets, lining up the right weapon on the right target as it flashes into view. At key junctions you call the turns, steering the hovercraft down one street or another, and choosing badly can mean an ambush or a dead end. Miss a cue and another precious hovercraft goes up in flames, followed by a dressing-down from your commanding officer and fellow pilots that is half the entertainment.

It shares the genre's limits: the action follows the footage, and memorization matters as much as reflexes. What it adds is a sense of scale and urgency that the earliest FMV games rarely managed, and turn calls that reward replaying missions to learn the right route through the city.

Arriving near the end of the system's run, it shows how far the format's ambitions had grown, and it makes a fitting late chapter for anyone following the Sega CD's live-action experiments from Sewer Shark onward.

About the game

Surgical Strike is an on-rails action shooter game that takes place against a full motion video backdrop depicting chaotic, war-ravaged cityscapes. You are to pilot the hovercraft, fire either bullets or rockets at opportune moments, and issue turn directives at key junctures. Miss a cue and another precious military hovercraft will be toast and you'll be chewed out by your superior officer and peers alike.
