Item Description
Eight fighters on one screen sounds like a recipe for madness, and in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U it is the best kind. Developed by Sora Ltd. with Bandai Namco Studios under series creator Masahiro Sakurai and published by Nintendo in 2014, the fourth console entry introduced 8-Player Smash and turned an already chaotic party fighter into a full living-room event, with most of the series' fundamentals sharpened along the way.
The roster was the biggest the series had seen. Mario, Link, Samus, Pikachu and the rest of Nintendo's regulars share the stage with newcomers like the Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina & Luma, Little Mac, Greninja, Palutena, Shulk and Bowser Jr., while Mega Man, Pac-Man and Sonic represent the guests. Stages range from Wily Castle and Skyloft to Pac-Land, Windy Hill Zone and the sneaky Gamer, where 5-Volt checks in on you, and every one has an Omega form that flattens it into a Final Destination-style layout for focused one-on-one play. Custom moves let you tweak each fighter's special attacks to suit your style.
Solo players are well looked after. Classic Mode lets you wager gold to raise the intensity, Master Hand and Crazy Hand run the high-risk Special Orders, Smash Tour turns the game into a board-game race played out on the GamePad, and the Stage Builder lets you draw your own arenas with the stylus. Hundreds of trophies celebrate Nintendo history, and this was the game that launched the amiibo line, letting figures become trainable Figure Players that learn from how you fight.
It also supports more ways to play than almost any console game of its era, including the Wii Remote, the Pro Controller, a 3DS running the 3DS version, and the GameCube controller through Nintendo's official adapter, which made it a favorite with Melee veterans. Its online modes went quiet when Nintendo closed the Wii U's network, but couch Smash is where this game shines. Many of the fighters who debuted here went on to anchor Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and this is the original big-screen home of that generation of the series.
