Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact cartridge. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Shogi has a way of humbling chess players. The board is bigger, the pieces are flat wedges marked with kanji, and the rule that changes everything is the drop: any piece you capture joins your side and can be placed back onto the board on a later turn. Pieces promote as they reach enemy territory, the king can be hunted from angles chess never allows, and a game that looks lost can turn on a single well-timed drop.

Super Shogi 3: Kitaihei is the 1995 entry in I'Max's Super Shogi series for the Super Famicom. I'Max built much of its reputation in Japan on board and table games, from the Super Shogi line to its Super Mahjong and Super Hanafuda series, and a third numbered shogi cartridge tells you this was a series with a steady audience among players who wanted a dependable opponent on the living-room console.

That is the appeal here: a quiet, focused game of strategy against the computer, the kind of cartridge that lived next to the family Super Famicom for years of evening matches. It is also a neat example of how deep the Japanese Super Famicom library runs beyond the action games that crossed the Pacific. On a Japanese import shelf, or in the hands of a player who picked up shogi through anime, manga or online play and wants to try it on period hardware, it is an unusual and authentic piece of the system's catalog.
