Item Description

For thirty years, kids sketched their dream Mario levels on notebook paper. Super Mario Maker finally handed them the real thing, with the Wii U GamePad stylus as the pencil, and Nintendo timed it to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. in 2015. It is equal parts game, toy and love letter to the series' history.

Building is as easy as dragging a Goomba onto the grid. Courses can be made in four styles, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U, and one tap rebuilds your level in a different look, with each style bringing its own moves: the raccoon tail from SMB3, the cape and Yoshi from World, wall jumps in the New Super Mario Bros. U style. The fun starts with combinations the original games never allowed, like wings on a Bowser, enemies stacked into wobbling towers, or a Bill Blaster that fires something other than Bullet Bills. Shake an element and it often changes form, and touches like the Undodog and the goofy sound effects you can drop into a course make the editor feel like a toy rather than a tool.

There is plenty to play, too. The 10 Mario Challenge strings together courses designed by Nintendo, and the Mystery Mushroom dresses Mario up as other characters in the original Super Mario Bros. style. amiibo can unlock costumes as well, and the 30th-anniversary Mario amiibo adds a Big Mushroom that lets him smash through blocks. At launch, the 100 Mario Challenge and Course World served up an endless stream of courses from players around the world; that online network has since been closed, so the disc today is a personal workshop for building, testing and handing the controller to whoever is on the couch.

Its influence reaches well beyond the Wii U. It led to a 3DS version and Super Mario Maker 2 on Switch, and it turned level design into a spectator sport, with fiendish troll courses and speedrun-style challenges filling streams for years. This is where that whole movement started, and drawing a course with the GamePad stylus still feels as close to sketching on notebook paper as any Mario Maker has managed.

About the game

Super Mario Maker lets people’s imaginations run wild. For the first time ever, friends can have fun playing through levels they create for one another. The Wii U GamePad controller makes it so easy for anyone to create levels; it may feel like simply sketching out ideas on paper. Players can enjoy a seemingly endless supply of inventive Mario levels from players around the world. The game includes a book totaling about 100 pages that illustrates the boundless possibilities in Super Mario Maker. Nintendo will also release two special Mario amiibo figures to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game. Tapping these amiibo in Super Mario Maker adds a Big Mushroom power-up to your course, allowing Mario to grow big and bust blocks from any direction, as well as adding a retro visual filter to the game, reminiscent of older cathode ray tube televisions. In addition, many other amiibo will also be compatible with Super Mario Maker through the use of a new item called the Mystery Mushroom.
