Item Description

Few games have carried as much weight as Super Mario Bros. When Nintendo brought the NES to North America in 1985, the home video game business was still reeling from the crash of 1983, and retailers were wary of anything that looked like another console. This was the game that made the case. One run through World 1-1 showed what a home system could do: a scrolling world full of secrets, a hero with real momentum and weight, and controls precise enough that every mistake felt like your own.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka built 32 stages across eight worlds, and the design teaches through play rather than text. The first Goomba walks straight at you, the first Super Mushroom slides out of a question block, and before long you are hunting for hidden 1-Up Mushrooms, climbing vines into coin-filled skies and dropping through pipes into underground bonus rooms. The Warp Zones hidden above the ceiling of World 1-2 rewarded curious players with a shortcut, and the infamous Minus World glitch became playground legend. Every castle ends with Bowser on a bridge over lava and Toad's crushing news that the princess is in another castle, until you finally reach World 8-4. Beat it, and a harder second quest awaits. Two players can alternate as Mario and Luigi, and Koji Kondo's music, from the bouncing overworld theme to the tense underground loop, became part of the culture almost instantly.

The five-screw shell places this cartridge in the earliest era of NES manufacturing. Nintendo's first Game Paks were held together by five screws, and later production moved to a three-screw shell secured with plastic tabs. The game inside is the same, but for collectors who care about how the NES library was physically produced, a five-screw Super Mario Bros. is a direct link to the launch period, when this cartridge was helping persuade a skeptical market that home consoles were worth another chance.

It is also simply a great game to sit down with today. The physics still feel right, the level design still teaches without a word, and the sprint from World 1-1 to the final showdown with Bowser has a rhythm that later Mario games built on rather than replaced. This is the foundation of the entire Super Mario series, in the shell Nintendo used when the story was just beginning.
