Item Description

The castle is the same, but the first hero to run up its drawbridge is green and has a very long tongue. Super Mario 64 DS starts with Yoshi as the only playable character: Mario, Luigi and Wario have gone missing inside Princess Peach's castle, and it falls to Yoshi to find them before anyone can go after Bowser. That one twist turns a game millions of players knew by heart into a fresh puzzle, because unlocking the full cast means learning the castle all over again.

Each hero plays differently. Yoshi swallows enemies and breathes fire, Luigi can turn invisible and slip through barriers, Wario punches through obstacles and turns to metal, and Mario can puff up like a balloon and float, with Power Flowers triggering each character's special trick. Some stars can only be reached by the right character, so switching between them becomes part of the hunt. The star count climbs from the original 120 to 150, and new bosses such as Goomboss, Chief Chilly and King Boo join the familiar faces from the Nintendo 64.

The DS hardware shapes the whole package. The top screen handles the 3D action while the bottom screen holds a map of each level, and players can steer with the D-pad or use the touch screen as a makeshift analog stick. Rabbits hidden around the castle grounds unlock a collection of stylus minigames that became a playground favorite in their own right, and a versus mode lets up to four players scramble for stars together over wireless play.

This was a Nintendo DS launch title in 2004, and it made a bold statement for the new handheld: a full 3D Mario adventure, the game that defined 3D platforming, now fit in a pocket with more to find than ever. If you know the N64 original inside out, the extra characters, stars and bosses make this the version with the most left to discover, and it is a natural first stop for exploring the DS's early library.
