Sixteen players, one maze, and a single misplaced bomb that ruins three friendships at once: that has always been the Bomberman promise, and Super Bomberman R 2 pushes it further than any entry before it. Konami released it in 2023 to mark the franchise's 40th anniversary and pitched it as the biggest Bomberman package in the series' history, and the mode list backs that up.

The headline addition is Castle, an asymmetric twist on the classic battle. One player defends a fortress stocked with traps, cannons, conveyor belts and a chosen special ability, while up to fifteen attackers scramble for keys to crack open the treasure chests hidden inside. Every attacker who opens a chest leaves the match, so the pressure keeps shifting until the clock runs out or the vault is empty. A Stage Editor lets you design your own Castle layouts, which turns the mode into a tinkering project as much as a party game.

The familiar standbys return beside it. Standard battle scales up to sixteen bombers, and Grand Prix splits players into two teams under Basic Bomber or Crystal rules, the latter a scramble to hoard the most crystals. Battle 64, the 64-player elimination format carried over from Super Bomberman R Online, was built around huge online lobbies. For solo play, the story mode sends the eight Bomberman Brothers, led by eldest brother White, from Planet Fulvita to Aquastar and beyond to stop the Black Moon, with help from the Ellons, small blue creatures who join the fight.

Reviews landed in mixed territory, but the core grid game is as sharp as ever: drop, step aside, read the blast radius, and box a rival into a corner before they do it to you. On PS4 it is a big, bright multiplayer game that rewards a full couch, and Castle mode gives longtime players a kind of match Bomberman never offered before.
