Item Description
After Suikoden IV divided players, Suikoden V came back with the political epic fans had been waiting for. The Queendom of Falena is ruled by Queen Arshtat, whose national treasure, the Sun Rune, can bring prosperity or ruin, and whose use of it on the city of Lordlake has left her increasingly erratic. The Sacred Games that will decide Princess Lymsleia's future are about to begin. You play the Prince, Arshtat's son, and when the rival Godwin family seizes the palace, his family is torn apart and the Queendom with it.
What follows is one of the richest stories in the series. Fleeing with his loyal bodyguard Lyon, the Prince frees the legendary tactician Lucretia Merces from prison, builds a headquarters, restores Lordlake and assembles the 108 Stars of Destiny into an army capable of retaking the throne from Gizel and Lord Marscal Godwin. His aunt Sialeeds is among the most fascinating characters the series ever wrote, and the slow-burn plotting rewards players who love betrayal, diplomacy and hard choices.
Under the hood, the game reverses Suikoden IV's least popular changes. Six-person parties are back, each member individually controllable, with reserves on the bench. A Formation system arranges your party on a grid, granting stat boosts with trade-offs and special attacks unique to each formation. War battles play out in real time across land and water, with a rock-paper-scissors balance of cavalry, infantry and archers, plus beaver and dragon cavalry units that cross both sea and shore. Developed by Konami with Hudson Soft, it arrived in North America in 2006 to warm reviews that praised its plot and cast.
Set six years before the original Suikoden and 142 years after Suikoden IV, it also connects the series' timeline in satisfying ways. It was the last numbered Suikoden released on the PlayStation 2, and it is where a long-running RPG series showed exactly what it had learned: deep recruitment, sharp politics and a Prince whose story earns every one of its many hours.
