Suikoden II opens with a betrayal so cruel that it sets the tone for everything after. Two boyhood friends, the hero and Jowy, are young soldiers in the Kingdom of Highland's Unicorn Brigade when their own prince, Luca Blight, has the unit slaughtered in the night to give Highland an excuse for war against the City-States of Jowston. The two escape by leaping from a cliff into the river below, and from that moment the game becomes a story about friendship tested by war, ambition and the weight of the Rune of Beginning, split between them as two halves of one power.
Few RPGs juggle as many ideas this gracefully. Ordinary encounters use six-member turn-based battles with unite attacks and rune magic, story-defining clashes become one-on-one duels where you read your opponent's words to guess the next move, and the war itself plays out in grid-based strategic army battles. Through it all you recruit the 108 Stars of Destiny, a cast of soldiers, merchants, chefs, scholars and oddballs who gradually turn an abandoned castle into a thriving headquarters full of shops, mini-games and even a cooking contest.
Luca Blight is the reason many players never forget this game. He is one of the most frightening villains of the PlayStation era, and the story treats his cruelty with real seriousness, while the hero's adopted sister Nanami and the slow, painful drift between the hero and Jowy give it its heart. Konami's sprite art is lush and expressive, the score is warm and memorable, and players who kept a save file from the original Suikoden can import it to carry certain characters and story details forward.
It is often named among the finest RPGs ever made, and it earns that reputation by trusting players with moral complexity and a story where victory always costs something. The PlayStation original is the way it was first played in English, sprites, music and all, and it pairs naturally with the first Suikoden for anyone building the classic Konami RPG shelf.
