Superman is the villain, and you are the one who has to stop him. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady Studios' 2024 follow-up to its Batman: Arkham games, turns the superhero formula on its head. Brainiac has invaded Metropolis and twisted the Justice League into his enforcers, and Amanda Waller's answer is Task Force X, a crew of expendable criminals with bombs implanted in their heads, ordered to take the heroes down.
Each of the four playable squad members moves through the city in a completely different way. Harley Quinn swings between rooftops with a grapple and a borrowed Bat-drone, Deadshot rockets skyward on a jetpack, Captain Boomerang blinks across the map with a Speed Force gauntlet, and King Shark crashes through the streets with enormous leaps. Traversal and gunplay are the game's strongest elements, and fights reward constant movement through the vertical, open-world Metropolis. Solo players can switch between the squad on the fly, and the game was built for four-player co-op as well.
The cast is the other big draw. The squad's bickering is sharp and funny, and the corrupted Justice League, including the Flash, Green Lantern John Stewart, Batman and Superman, are written as frightening threats rather than the heroes players know. The game also features Kevin Conroy's final performance as Batman, recorded before his death in 2022, which gives his scenes extra weight for anyone who grew up with his voice.
Reception was mixed: critics praised the performances, presentation and traversal but found the live-service mission structure repetitive, and Rocksteady wrapped up new seasonal content within a year of launch. Taken on its own terms, it carries the Arkhamverse that began with Arkham Asylum in 2009 into new territory and gives Conroy's Batman his last word, which earns it a place next to the Arkham games on the shelf.
