Item Description
Gravity is the real enemy in Sub-Terrania. The little attack ship drifts, slides and drops the moment you ease off the thrust, and every rescue in the game's caverns comes down to fighting that pull with careful bursts while alien defenses close in. It was the first game from Zyrinx, a Copenhagen studio formed entirely by veterans of the Amiga demoscene, and Sega published it on the Genesis.
Ten missions give it structure, each set in a vast cavern with its own weather and conditions. You rescue trapped miners, recover sub parts and take on huge bosses, all while watching a fuel gauge that forces you to plan a route rather than wander. Because the ship carries real weight and inertia, the game asks for precision over twitch reflexes, playing like a descendant of computer-scene gravity shooters such as Thrust with the polish of a console action game.
The presentation is where the demoscene roots show. Fluid animation, layered scrolling and moody lighting make it look like a coder's showcase pushed onto a cartridge, and the soundtrack is by Jesper Kyd, one of Zyrinx's founding members. The Zyrinx team later re-formed and went on to create IO Interactive and the Hitman series, which gives this cartridge a fascinating place in game-development history.
Sub-Terrania never became a household name, and that is part of its appeal today. It is a demanding, atmospheric shooter for players who enjoy mastering a tricky control scheme, and it shows what a small European team could wring out of the Genesis when it was trying to make a name for itself. Play it with the lights low and the volume up.

You must explore it and complete the mission objectives -- usually collecting sub parts, rescuing trapped miners, or destroying giant, epic bosses. You can also explore the levels, but keep an eye on your fuel gauge and beware the many hazards!
