Strider 2 on the PlayStation is one of the most stylish action games the system ever received. Capcom's sequel began in Japanese arcades in December 1999 on Sony's ZN-2 board, and because that hardware was so close to the PlayStation, it came home to the PlayStation in 2000. The game follows Strider Hiryu, the acrobatic ninja agent, slicing and dashing through a kinetic series of stages that feel ripped straight from a Saturday morning fever dream: Hong Kong, Germany and the frozen expanse of Antarctica, which can be tackled in any order, then the Flying Battleship Balrog and the space station Third Moon, both returning from the original Strider.
Strider 2 is Capcom's own direct sequel to its 1989 arcade original, arriving a full decade later and making no reference to the Western-only Strider II that U.S. Gold had produced without Capcom's direct involvement. Hiryu's sleek redesign had first appeared a year earlier in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, where a new generation of players met him as a fighter, and Strider 2 finally gave that version of the hero a full adventure of his own. For fans who had been waiting since the original cabinet, it was a long-overdue return for one of Capcom's coolest characters, and it plays like the studio knew exactly what people had missed.
The gameplay channels pure arcade DNA: tight controls, huge and theatrical boss encounters, and a difficulty curve that rewards patience and quick reflexes in equal measure. Hiryu climbs walls and ceilings, dashes, double jumps and slides, and collecting Boost items lets his Cypher fire plasma waves until the gauge runs out. Clear every mission and Hien, wielding two ranged cyphers, becomes playable. With polygon backdrops behind its fast, fluid action, it is visually distinctive and one of the later Capcom releases on the console.
Strider 2, released in arcades and on the Sony PlayStation in 2000, is the sequel to the popular arcade and multiplatform game Strider. This game is considered the true sequel to the original Strider, rather than Strider Returns. Strider Returns is not considered a part of the series, as it was not developed by Capcom, it was exclusive to the west, and most people hated it. Strider 2, on the other hand, was very well received. Unfortunately, despite being hailed by critics and series fans, Strider 2 did not sell well. The PlayStation version of the game included the original Strider on a separate disc, for those who had never played it to become accommodated with the series. In the United States, there was a printing error for the game that swapped the labelling of each CD, so the Strider 2 disc was labelled Strider, and the Strider disc was labelled Strider 2.
