Item Description

Steambot Chronicles is a PlayStation 2 cult favorite built on a simple, wonderful premise: what if a role-playing game let you do almost anything with a walking steam machine? Developed by Irem and brought to North America by Atlus in 2006, it drops you into an alternate Industrial Revolution where Trotmobiles, giant two-legged mechs, serve as transport, work vehicles, fighting machines and a way to show off your personal style. Nothing else in the PS2 library feels quite like it.

You play Vanilla R. Beans, who washes up on Seagull Beach with no memory and is found by Coriander, nicknamed Connie, a singer with a traveling band called the Garland Globetrotters. From there the game hands you remarkable freedom. You can busk on street corners with a harmonica and work your way up to the trumpet, saxophone, violin, accordion, drums, guitar, piano and even church organs through rhythm mini-games, join the band and eventually manage it, trade commodities between towns, or test your machine in gladiator-style Trotmobile battles. There is even another band to join, Fennel and the Blue Lightning, once you get your hands on an electric guitar.

Your choices carry weight. After a key concert in Nefroburg, you can steer Vanilla toward heroism or villainy, and the road also crosses paths with a bandit gang called the Killer Elephants. The Trotmobile itself is a long-term project: dozens of parts can be bought, found or crafted, and every build trades speed against durability and power, so your machine slowly becomes a reflection of how you like to play.

Reviewers praised its huge amount of freedom and its clever musical rhythm games while grumbling about slowdown and load times, and that split captures the game well: a little rough at the edges, endlessly charming at heart. It is the rare RPG where tuning a guitar and tuning a mech feel equally important, and an easy pick for a PS2 shelf that celebrates the platform's most original ideas.
