Item Description

Spyro: Year of the Dragon is the third entry in Insomniac Games' beloved Spyro the Dragon trilogy for the original PlayStation, and widely regarded as the pinnacle of the series. Released in 2000, it arrived near the end of the PS1's lifespan and sent the little purple dragon out on an absolute high note. The premise is irresistible: a mysterious sorceress has stolen a clutch of dragon eggs from the Forgotten Worlds, and it falls to Spyro — with the help of his dragonfly pal Sparx and a colorful crew of new friends — to chase her down and bring them all home. It's the kind of setup that hooks you instantly and keeps you running, gliding, and flame-breathing through world after gorgeous world.

What made Year of the Dragon feel like such a leap forward was the sheer variety it packed onto a single disc. Beyond the core Spyro gameplay of charging rhynocs, collecting gems, and soaring across wide-open levels, the game introduced playable characters including Sheila the Kangaroo, Sgt. Byrd the flying penguin, Bentley the Yeti, and Agent 9 the space monkey. Each character brought their own mechanics and mini-game sequences — skateboarding stages, top-down shooter sections, and more — giving the whole adventure a playful, anything-goes energy that kept things fresh from start to finish.

Visually, Year of the Dragon pushed the PlayStation hardware harder than almost anything else on the platform. The levels are vibrant and imaginative, ranging from glittering underwater realms to sun-baked desert homesteads to frozen tundra towns. Stewart Copeland's iconic soundtrack — funky, whimsical, and completely unforgettable — ties every world together with a musical identity that fans can still hum from memory decades later. The combination of stunning art direction and that legendary score gave the game a personality that stood apart from every other platformer of the era.

Owning a complete in box copy of a PS1-era classic like this is something special. The original box art, the manual filled with tips and character artwork, the black-label disc — it's a time capsule of early-2000s gaming at its most creative and joyful. Complete PlayStation copies in this condition are increasingly difficult to find as collections are broken up and packaging gets lost over the years, making a CIB copy a genuine prize for any serious collector.

Year of the Dragon is a perfect pick for PlayStation collectors, fans of 3D platformers, or anyone who grew up gliding across those shimmering Insomniac worlds and wants to recapture that feeling on original hardware. It also makes a fantastic entry point for younger players discovering the PS1 library for the first time.
