Item Description

Spyro has charged, glided and flamed his way through plenty of adventures, but Shadow Legacy is the one where he earns experience points. That single change makes this 2005 Nintendo DS game the most experimental branch of the purple dragon's original story. It opens with Spyro dozing on the sand at Dragon Shores while his friends head home. Then a dark storm rolls in and drags the Dragon Realms, Avalar and the Forgotten Worlds into a sinister Shadow Realm. Elder Tomas hands Spyro the Shadowstone, and the hunt for his missing friends begins.

Developed by Amaze Entertainment and published under the Sierra label, the game keeps Spyro's familiar charge-and-flame play and layers an "RPG light" structure on top. Defeating enemies and finishing quests earns XP, and every level-up sends Spyro back to the Dragon Temple to learn new skills, so his toolkit of dragon-kata moves and magic grows as you play. Spells are cast by drawing symbols on the touch screen with the stylus, the most DS-specific idea in the game and a fun one to experiment with. Optional side quests reward players who like to wander off the main path with extra experience.

The journey covers a lot of ground, from Dragon Village and Cliff Town to the Savannah and Skelos Badlands of Avalar and stops in the Forgotten Worlds such as Bunny Bayou and Moleville. Story-wise it picks up directly after Spyro: A Hero's Tail, and it turned out to be the final main-series game in the original Spyro continuity. A year later, The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning rebooted the franchise, and its producers carried some of Shadow Legacy's story ideas into that new timeline.

Critics in 2005 were lukewarm, pointing to rough technical edges and a light challenge, so this is not the place to meet Spyro for the first time. Its pull is as a curiosity: the moment the series tried to become a role-playing game, and the closing chapter of the timeline that began on the PlayStation. On a shelf beside A Hero's Tail and the Game Boy Advance entries, it finishes that era's story.
