Spyro has always been the dragon who charges first and asks questions later, and Spyro Reignited Trilogy rebuilds his first three adventures with real affection for that spirit. Toys for Bob remade Insomniac's PlayStation originals, Spyro the Dragon, Ripto's Rage! and Year of the Dragon, from scratch in Unreal Engine 4, keeping the classic level layouts while giving every world, gem and fleeing sheep a lavish new coat of paint.

The first game is still the purest of the three: a gem-hunting sprint across the Dragon Worlds to free the dragons Gnasty Gnorc has frozen in crystal, with Sparx the dragonfly buzzing alongside as your health meter. Ripto's Rage! moves the action to Avalar and adds swimming, climbing and hovering, plus a terrific supporting cast in Hunter, Elora and the ever-greedy Moneybags. Year of the Dragon sends Spyro after the Sorceress and a haul of stolen dragon eggs, with playable friends such as Sheila the kangaroo, Sgt. Byrd, Bentley the yeti and Agent 9 breaking up the platforming with fresh ways to play.

The remake's care shows in the details. Every one of the dragons Spyro rescues in the first game was given a distinct new design, the cast is far more expressive, and the dialogue was rerecorded. The rearranged soundtrack comes from original composer Stewart Copeland, the Police drummer whose grooves defined the PlayStation games, and you can switch back to the classic tracks whenever you like. Shared quality-of-life features were unified across all three games, so the trilogy plays as one consistent package rather than three separate ports.

For anyone who spent the late '90s with a PlayStation controller in hand, this is the ideal way to revisit three of the era's friendliest, most rewarding collect-a-thon platformers. For newer players it is a bright, gentle introduction to a purple hero whose charm has not faded at all.
