SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge arrived on the PlayStation in September 2001, at the height of the original SpongeBob craze, when the cartoon was everywhere and fans wanted any way they could find to step into Bikini Bottom. Developed by Climax Group and published by THQ, it brings the colorful, anarchic humor of the Nickelodeon series to life as a platformer, guiding SpongeBob through stages filled with the kind of silly charm that made the show a generational phenomenon.
The story is pure SpongeBob. It is Patrick's birthday, and SpongeBob wants to give him a photo signed by Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. The retired heroes send him on four tasks, and the errand sprawls across five chapters of four levels each, from Bikini Bottom itself to the Center of the Earth, a prehistoric Bikini Bottom, the gloom of Rock Bottom and a grimy industrial zone, with a boss, the Flying Dutchman among them, waiting at the end of every chapter.
On the PlayStation, golden spatulas work much like Sonic's rings: they double as SpongeBob's health, a hit costs him his stash, and getting caught with none costs a life. Collecting enough of them in each chapter opens a secret amusement park level, Six Clams Adventure Land, where SpongeBob rides through obstacles gathering flower tokens that buy props for Patrick's party, a sweet reward that ties the whole adventure back to the birthday that started it.
It captures that early-2000s energy well: bright visuals, familiar settings and a lighthearted tone that made it a hit with younger players. Critics were mixed, but the PlayStation version sold more than a million copies, making it one of the system's bigger sellers, and it was later reissued in the Greatest Hits line. It makes a fun snapshot of SpongeBob's earliest days on home consoles.
