Item Description

New York is falling to the symbiotes, and Spider-Man has to decide how dark he is willing to go to save it. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Treyarch's 2008 action game for Activision, turns Manhattan into an open-world battleground as Venom's invasion spreads block by block, transforming ordinary citizens and familiar Marvel faces into black-goo hosts. It is a moodier, more combat-heavy take on the wall-crawler than the movie games that came before it, and that edge is a big part of its lasting cult appeal.

The signature idea is the instant suit swap. One button flips Peter between the classic red-and-blue costume, quick and acrobatic, and the black symbiote suit, which hits harder and fights dirtier, and you can switch in the middle of a fight. Combat flows from the street to the sides of skyscrapers to open air: web-strikes zip Spider-Man straight into the next target, wall combat lets him brawl on vertical surfaces, and aerial strings keep enemies juggled high above traffic. When the city is crawling with symbiotes, the speed of it all is exhilarating.

Red and black are also moral choices. At key points in the story Spider-Man decides whether to act like the hero or give in to the symbiote, and those decisions shape his alliances and steer the game toward different endings. The supporting cast is a who's who of street-level Marvel, with Black Cat, Luke Cage, Moon Knight, Wolverine, Kingpin and Mary Jane all caught up in the crisis, and the allies Peter earns can be called into battle as backup.

Web of Shadows was Treyarch's final Spider-Man game after a run that included the much-loved Spider-Man 2 movie game, and the studio's traversal know-how shows in every swing. Along with Activision's other Marvel titles, it was pulled from digital storefronts at the start of 2014, which makes physical copies the way to revisit it on PS3. It is the Spider-Man game that treats the black suit as a temptation rather than a costume change, and builds a whole city-sized adventure around that pull.

About the game

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a video game title encompassing three versions: a full-3D action game for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360; a 2.5D sidescrolling beat em up action game for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 (called Amazing Allies Edition), and a 2.5D side-scrolling brawler/platformer for the Nintendo DS. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, along with most other games published by Activision that had used the Marvel licence, was de-listed and removed from all digital storefronts on January 1, 2014.
