Item Description

Four Spider-Men, four art styles and one very bad accident. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions begins with Peter Parker trying to stop Mysterio from stealing the Tablet of Order and Chaos and shattering it in the struggle, scattering its fragments across the multiverse. Madame Web calls on the Amazing, Noir, 2099 and Ultimate versions of the web-slinger to recover the pieces before the villains who find them grow too powerful to stop. Beenox built it for Activision in 2010, years before multiverse Spider-Man stories became a box-office event, and the premise still feels like a comic fan's dream assignment.

What makes it work is that every dimension plays and looks like its own game. The Amazing world is bright and cel-shaded with a 1960s comic-book look, and its boss list runs through Kraven the Hunter, Sandman and Juggernaut. Noir drains the color for a dark, gritty Depression-era city where Spider-Man stalks the shadows and takes enemies down silently before facing Hammerhead, the Vulture and Norman Osborn's Goblin. Spider-Man 2099 trades rooftops for a gleaming future metropolis, with breathless free-fall sequences and the power to slow time, while the Ultimate suit's symbiote tendrils let Peter tear through whole crowds on the way to Electro, Deadpool and Carnage.

The casting is a love letter to Spider-Man's animated history. Neil Patrick Harris voices the Amazing Spider-Man; Christopher Daniel Barnes, the voice of the 1990s animated series, plays Noir; Dan Gilvezan of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends takes on 2099; and Josh Keaton from The Spectacular Spider-Man handles the Ultimate suit, with Stan Lee himself narrating. Critics singled out the voice work, the humor and the four-universe concept, and the boss fights lean hard into spectacle, with every villain supercharged by the tablet fragment in their grasp.

It is the rare licensed game whose central idea aged into the mainstream. Playing it now feels like discovering an early draft of the Spider-Verse craze, told through brawling combat, quippy banter and four distinct visual identities in a single PS3 adventure. If your favorite Spider-Man depends on which comic you grew up reading, Shattered Dimensions has a version of him waiting for you.

About the game

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions blends together the many alternate universes of the world-famous webslinger with four unique takes on Spider-Man's history in comics. In the game, Spider-Man attempts to retrieve a piece of a tablet that's been scattered across multiple parallel dimensions, and in doing so he crosses over to storylines famous to comic book aficionados as variant tellings (including The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man Noir & Ultimate Spider-Man) of the Spider-Man mythology.
