Item Description

Sparkster is the rocket-powered follow-up to Rocket Knight Adventures, starring the opossum knight himself in one of the most fast-paced action platformers the Super Nintendo has to offer. Developed and published by Konami in 1994 and directed by Hideo Ueda, this SNES game is entirely its own design, distinct from the Genesis game released the same year as Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2: same hero, same jet pack, same glorious chaos, but with levels, bosses and design choices built specifically around Nintendo's hardware.

The opossum kingdom of Eginasem is under attack by the Lioness's army of yellow dog and wolf soldiers, and Sparkster sets out to rescue Princess Flora and settle the score with his rival Rocket Knight, Axel Gear. He tears through large, multi-directional stages with a sword that fires energy bolts, a rocket pack for short bursts of flight and a new rolling dash. Konami was at the top of its game during this period, and it shows in every frame: the sprite work is expressive, the animations are fluid, and the bosses are imaginative, oversized machines built from independently moving pieces.

The stages burst with personality and variety, from a breakneck auto-scrolling ride aboard a robot ostrich to a top-down shooting stage and a final assault on the enemy battleship. Even the difficulty setting changes how far the story goes, with Easy ending at the showdown with Axel Gear, Normal pressing on past him and Hard adding a true final stage. This is Konami doing what it did best in the 16-bit era: tight controls, spectacular presentation and a relentless sense of momentum from start to finish.

Despite its quality, Sparkster never quite reached the mainstream recognition it deserved, which makes discovering it today all the more satisfying. For anyone who grew up with Rocket Knight Adventures or simply has a weakness for jet-pack-powered heroics, it is a stand-out SNES platformer and a favorite among fans of classic Konami action.

About the game

The eponymous main character is an opossum knight who fights an army of yellow wolves and robots. He is armed with a sword that can fire energy bolts and a rocket pack that allows him to fly short distances. The gameplay remains mostly the same as in Mega Drive games, with the most notable change being the addition of a short-distance rolling dash. One major difference is that the game's final level depends on a difficulty player selected. On easy, the game culminates with battle against Axel Gear, but on normal, the story continues with Sparkster fighting the leader of the Wolves on the next level. On hard difficulty, the game continues beyond that, with the true final stage.
