Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Few sounds in gaming are as recognizable as the marching heartbeat of the original Space Invaders, speeding up as the ranks thin until the last alien is racing across the screen. Tomohiro Nishikado's 1978 game for Taito set off a worldwide craze and essentially launched the shooter genre, and Atari's cartridge brings that relentless pressure to the 5200.

The fundamentals are pure Space Invaders: slide your laser cannon along the bottom of the screen, pick off the advancing rows, duck behind your shields as they crumble under fire, and take a shot at the mystery ship crossing the top for bonus points. The tension comes from the formation itself, which drops closer every time it reaches the edge, so every missed shot buys the invaders a little more ground.

This is not a straight copy of the coin-op. The 5200 version builds on Atari's 400/800 computer version, which had dropped the defensive bunkers entirely, and moves it back toward the arcade by bringing the shields back. It also varies the look of the invaders as the waves go by instead of sticking to the arcade's single design. Those touches give it a personality of its own and a reason for arcade veterans to play it alongside the original.

As a piece of history it is hard to beat: the game that turned video games into a phenomenon, in a version made specifically for Atari's 5200 SuperSystem.
